How I wash and take care of my Makeup brushes!

I thought I would do this post after watching a video of Naseem Delan where she explained what well known and very hyped up products she didn't fall for and why.

I've been watching her videos for a few weeks now and I'm happy to have discovered  her channel as she is a very sweet and authentic person, which is quite rare on Youtube these days.

I liked this video because she expressed her honest opinion about a few things including the famous Sigma Spa™ Brush Cleaning Glove (here you can see MakeupSavvy found a much cheaper dupe of it =)).

I'd like to talk about that because at first I thought that it seemed like another completely useless and over-hyped product and it's also way too expensive, but there's actually one good side to it: it sparked my imagination!

When I saw this I figured that I could use a simple object to take my brush cleaning to another level. Any makeup user or makeup artist knows how time consuming and plain boring brush cleaning can be so anything that can make me save up some of my precious time is more than welcome.

Here's what I use to wash my brushes:

I trimmed some of the bristles for smaller brushes or thick brushes with shorter bristles!

It's actually a brush that I use to wash my hair, it really gets in there when you want to scrub your scalp or if you need to detangle your hair when it's dry (doing it wet is a big no no!!!). This is quite inexpensive. I saw it on Ebay for a few dollars (if you follow the link you can see a few suggestions).

I also use this to make them dry, they're dupes of the brush guards and I got them for pennies on ebay here and here.

It allows me to put them upside down in a container so that the water will drip right out and not damage the base of the bristles where the glue binds them together (example here), it also preserves the shape of the bristles.

What I do: I take all of the brushes and wet them a bit then I lay them flat (so that the water doesn't get into the metal thingie ferule!)

Then I take them one by one and apply some of the soap on them and start swirling the bristles on the hair brush,

this will remove most of the residue as you can see here. Then I rinse,but  for my bigger or thicker brushes I wash them again to make sure that it's really clean

and then I put them in these brush guard things that I got from Ebay and put them head down in a glass container and leave them until they're dry. 

Voila!

These few steps may seem complicated but they're actually quite easy and they will help you keep your brushes far longer and save you some time and water because the brushes are very clean very fast.

Sometimes we pay big bucks for our brushes so the least we can do is take care of them as much as we can.

Th detergent that I use on the brushes is quite drying, when I used to wash my brushes with my hands I noticed that so maybe you would like to try something less harsh or more eco-friendly, for that I suggest using some liquid castille soap (example here). You can also add some olive oil with the soap that you use to make the bristles stay nice and shiny.

The picture that I linked of a makeup brush and what is inside is from Evgeny Cosmetics' Facebook Page, I thought that it would be a good way to show the inside of makeup brushes and understand why you should be careful when washing them. He used some sort of twine to keep the bristles together then there's glue binding them on the tips but I've seen the inside of another random makeup brush and there wasn't any twine so you can imagine that if the bristles are only held by the glue, it's quite delicate.

My favorite eyeliner brush

My favorite eyeliner brush, for gel and liquid liner, is a nail-art brush.

Mon pinceau eyeliner préféré, pour l'eyeliner gel et liquide est un pinceau nail-art.

So, as the title indicates, I'm gonna be telling you all about my favourite brush that I use to create the best winged liner.

Donc, comme le titre l'indique, je vais tout vous  dire sur le pinceau que j'utilise pour créer le meilleur look Cat eye.

it's actually an nail-art brush but I love it for liner since the bristles are much softer and more flexible than a classic eyeliner brush.

il s'agit en fait d'un pinceau nail-art, mais je l'aime pour le liner car les poils sont beaucoup plus doux et plus souple qu'un pinceau eyeliner classique.

Being more at ease while using this brush actually saves me a lot of time (in the morning especially) and I don't have to pick and choose between different brushes as I naturally go to this one everytime I need a liner look.

Le fait que ce pinceu soit plus maniable et facile à utiliser qu'un autre me fait gagner pas mal de temps (en particulier le matin) et je n'ai pas à choisir entre différents types de pinceaux car je prends naturellement celui-ci à chaque fois .

It's suitable for both thin and thick lines and gives you a lot of control to draw the line the way you prefer. I can't remember how I came up with this idea but I'm glad I did.

Il peut être utilisé que ce soit pour les tracés fins ou plus épais et vous donne beaucoup de contrôle pour tracer la ligne de la façon que vous préférez. Je ne me souviens pas vraiment comment j'ai eu cette idée mais je suis contente de l'avoir eue.

What I've been up to...

I've been trying new colours and looks, nothing special or that I could really blog about (yet) because I'm trying to perfect it a bit. I also wanted to do some nailart because  my sister brought me back some fun stuff but my nails have been a mess these days. Maybe by this weekend I'll come up with something though. And since my sister is around I'll try to see if I can get her to sit still for a little while so I can do her makeup  too ;)

J'ai testé de nouvelles couleurs et des looks, rien de spécial ou que je puisse poster (pour le moment) parce que je suis en train de les peaufiner un peu. Je voulais aussi faire un peu de nailart parce que ma soeur m'a ramené un chouète set de nail art, mais mes ongles ont été un peu abimés ces jours-çi. Peut-être que ce week-end je vais trouver quelque chose de bien à faire. Et puisque ma sœur est ici je vais essayer de voir si je peux la faire asseoir pendant un petit moment pour que je puisse faire son maquillage, si elle me laisse faire bien sur ;)

I haven't done a look with the green palettes yet but it's definitely in the works because I think it's the kind of look that anyone would be interested in for spring or the beginning of summer. These don't look like it, but they are actually quite pigmented and with a good base or primer, a little goes a long way. I'm definitely gonna do a cat eye look with this, I think it would be perfect for this.

Je n'ai pas encore fait un look avec les palettes vertes mais c'est certainement dans mes projets parce que je pense que c'est le genre de look qui peut être intéressant pour le printemps ou au début de l'été. Ceux-çi n'en ont pas l'air, mais ils sont en fait très pigmentés et avec une bonne base ou primer, un petit peu peut faire beaucoup. Je suis vais  certainement faire un look "cat eye" avec, je pense que ça s'y prète parfaitement.

I've also been cooking a bit more than usual but for work, I try to cook my own lunch for work and I also cook for my colleagues sometimes when we decide to eat together on the terrace. The weather is getting better and better and we're soon gonna have a lawn here so I can't wait to see what it'll look like ^^

J'ai aussi cuisiné un peu plus que d'habitude, mais pour le travail, j'essaie de préparer mon propre lunch pour le travail et je cuisiner aussi pour mes collègues parfois, lorsque nous décidons de manger ensemble sur la terrasse. Le temps est de mieux en mieux et nous allons bientôt avoir une pelouse ici, donc j'ai hâte de voir ce que ça va donner ^ ^

I've also been thinking a lot about doing video tutorials and also reviews but I'm still not 100% sure so I'll wait until I get there. Whenever that happens you'll be the first to know.

Victoria's secret Makeup Look made simple!

Here's a pictorial of how I do my eye makeup usually, I just switch up the eyeshadow colours, the shape of my liner and the amount of mascara I use.

Voici un tutoriel photo de la méthode que j'utilise pour me maquiller les yeux la plupart du temps, je change juste les couleurs de fards à paupières, la forme de mon liner et la quantité de mascara que j'utilise.

So first of all I always do my face makeup first, I tried doing it the other way around but it ended up being a great waste of time and making me forget to use some stuff too (primer, forgetting to do my brows etc...)

Premièrement, je fais toujours le teint d'abord, j'ai éssayé de faire l'inverse mais ça m'a fait perdre beaucoup de temps et j'ai même réussi à oublier d'utiliser certains produits (base pour le fard à paupières, faire mes sourcils etc...)

After writing this post I noticed that the look was like a VS tutorial that I saw recently, I was even wearing the pink robe! =)

Après avoir rédigé ce post j'ai remarqué que le look ressemblait à un tutoriel VS que j'ai vu, je portais même le peignoir rose! =)

I always apply some lip balm before doing anything else that way it has the time to soak in.

J'applique toujours un baume sur mes lèvres avant de faire quoi que ce soit d'autre comme ça ça a le temps de poser et de bien hydrater les lèvres.

How I did after doing my face:

Ce que j'ai fait après le teint:

In the inner corner of my eyes, I always use a highlighter. Here I used a bit of the highlighter in the Sleek Face Contour kit that I have. 

Dans le coin interne de mes yeux, j'utilise toujours un fard lumineux ou un highlighter. Içi j'ai utilisé un peu du highlighter de mon Sleek Face Contour kit.

Then I took the gold/copper shadow and patted it on the middle of my lid up to the crease. After that, I added some of the darkest shadow on the outside corner using a random plastic card to add definition and  to make sure that the line would be well defined, it also helps to prevent the shadow from going on the bottom lid when you don't want it to go there. Afterwards, I buffed it a bit with a little blending brush.

Ensuite, j'ai pris un fard à paupières doré/cuivré que j'ai posé au doigt sur le milieu de ma paupière en m'arrétant au pli. Après ça, j'ajouté un peu du fard à paupières le plus foncé sur le coin externe en utilisant une carte plastifiée pour ajouter un peu de définition au trait et pour être sure que le trait soit bien droit, ça aide aussi pour éviter que le fard à paupières ne dépasse sur la paupière inferieure. Ensuite j'ai estompé avec un petit pinceau.

Here you can see the different colours (where they stop and where another colour starts) I don't really like that so I usually buff it out a bit with a clean flat eyeshadow brush.
Ici on voit les différences de couleurs (là où l'une s'arrête et où la suivante commence) je n'aime pas ça donc d'habitude j'estompe avec un pinceau plat propre.

This is how it looks after: it's more smooth.
Voici comment c'est ensuite, plus fondu.

Then this is where I add some brown eyeliner. I like black eyeliner, but I rarely use it because I find that it's a bit too intense. 
Ensuite c'est l'étape où j'ajoute de l'eyeliner marron. J'aime bien l'eyeliner noir mais je trouve que c'est un peu trop intense parfois.

Here I brought the eyeliner as far as the eyesadow.
Ici on voit bien que j'ai étiré l'eyeliner pour qu'il soit au même niveau que le fard foncé.

As you can see, my eyelashes are pretty much straight, I'll show you how I "fix" them.(Dunno why I look so pissed on these two pics >_<')

Comme vous pouvez le constater, mes cils sont droits. Je vais vous dire comment je les "arrange". (Je ne sais pas pourquoi j'ai l'air énervée sur ses deux photos >_<')

Then I curl my lashes and apply some lash primer and some mascara. I don't always use the primer but I really like the volume it gives to my lashes and I find that they stay curled better and longer too. When applying the mascara I put one coat on the top of my lashes then two coats on the bottom to "lift" them. And it works!

Je recourbe mes cils puis j'applique une base pour les cils et un peu de mascara. Je n'utilise pas toujours une base  mais j'aie beaucoup le volume que ça donne à mes cils et je trouve qu'ils restent mieux recourbés et plus longtemps . Quand j'applique le mascara, je mets une couche sur le dessus de mes cils puis deux couches par dessous pour les "réhausser". Et ça fonctionne!

Benefit Eyes Bright: This is my final touch for the eyes, the secret weapon against sleepy eyes and red eye days.
Ceci est ma touche finale pour les yeux, l'arme secrète contre les yeux dormeurs le matin ou les yeux un peu rouges.

Voila!

Here you can see that the "Eye Bright" is almost unnoticeable as I don't apply too much, if I do it usually ends up on my contacts and drives me nuts so...

Ici on voit que le Eye Bright ne se voit presque pas puisque je n'en mets que juste un peu, si je le fais je me retrouve avec un peu de produit collé à mes lentilles ce qui m'énerve donc...

For the lips I use my one and only lipstick (yes, it's my only one, I prefer lipgloss and lip pencils), the 55 Colourglide lipstick from the Body Shop.

It's a very good dupe for the Smashbox‘s Photo Finish Lipstick in Pout and YSL’s Rouge Volupté in 19.

I like to apply some lip gloss on top sometimes, but here I kept it simple to keep the focus on the eyes ;)

For those wondering how I did my brows, it's simple I used the same eyeliner I used for my eyes and then I added some of the bronzing powder from the  Sleek Face Contour kit: easy peasy!

Pour les lèvres, j'ai utilisé mon seul et unique rouge à lèvres (oui c'est le seul que j'ai, je préfère les gloss et les crayons pour les lèvres), le 55 Colourglide de The Body Shop.

C'est un très bon dupe pour la teinte Pout du rouge à lèvres Smashbox Photo Finish et le YSL Rouge Volupté N° 19.

Parfois, j'aime bien mettre un peu de gloss par dessus mais ici je voulais plus attirer l'attention sur mes yeux.

Pour ceux et celles qui se demandent comment j'ai fait mes sourcils, c'est simple. J'ai utilisé le même liner brun que pour mes yeux puis j'ai ajouté avec un pinceau biseauté un peu de la poudre bronzante du kit  Sleek Face Contour.
